The boat neck style, modest yet dramatic, originated in France as the striped undershirt provided to the French navy in the 1850s. The neckline is also shaped like a boat, so the name "bateau neck" just stuck. In the 1930s, the bateau neck swept through the fashion world, popular especially with the artists and thinkers leading culture down a more free and expressive path.
Today, the swooping neckline elevates the t-shirt and can easily be styled with most bottoms.
